Recommendations is an incredible new section of canofzebras.com in which I ask some of my favorite filmmakers and musicians to recommend 5 films and 5 albums they would like to share with the world. These are not top 5 lists, but rather 5 films and 5 albums that you may have missed out on if not for having them recommended to you here. Recommendations will not always be the obscurest of the obscure, but they're not trying to impress you. What you won't find here are the usual movies and music people push on you.

Please report any broken links to me.

Adam Wingard
filmmaker / painter

I first met Adam in 2006 after he invited me to his house to watch his gorefest, Home Sick. We had a six-hour long discussion of film into the wee hours of the night that only came to end because I had to return home for work. He later asked me to co-shoot a scene from his psychedelic horror-drama, Pop Skull, and then he became my roommate for half a year. I had a bit role in his short, Laura Panic: a film which landed him on Steven Spielberg's On the Lot. Pop Skull star Lane Hughes and I also composed the music for his short, Thousand Year Sleep. Wingard returned the favor by shooting Quarantine: Chuck & Nash III for me, which featured his girlfriend, Amanda Crawford, who stars in his latest award-winning short, Cerebella. He is currently in pre-production on a new feature.

Possession (Andrzeg Zulawski, 1981)
IMDb | Netflix

Virtually unknown gem starring Sam Neil and Isabelle Adjani. I'll just say its one of the most emotionally intense films I've ever seen.

Tokyo Fist (Shinya Tsukamoto, 1995)
IMDb | Netflix

Very influential movie to me in its use of extreme colors and gritty camera stylings. Tsukamoto is well known for Tetsuo but I think this film is his best.

Clean, Shaven (Lodge Kerrigan, 1993)
IMDb | Netflix

It was strange watching this film back in 2007. How had I overlooked it for so long? Amazing sound design.

Reflections of Evil (Damon Packard, 2002)
IMDb | Netflix

The most mind numbing assualt on the senses that I have ever seen.

Gerry (Gus Van Sant, 2002)
IMDb | Netflix

My favorite of the death trilogy and Van Sant's movies. This one goes largely overlooked, in my opinion its probably the best film I have ever seen.

Bethany Curve - You Brought Us Here
iTunes

The best shoegaze album of all time.

Liars - Drum's Not Dead
iTunes

Probably the most hypnotically mystical music I have EVER heard. The first time I had an out of body experience I was listening to this.

DJ Krush and Toshinori Kondo - Ki Oku
Amazon

A dark noirscape of chill sounds and spacial repetition. I've been listening to this since 2001.

Phosphorescent - Pride
iTunes

Dark folk album with endless emotional depth. Never gets old.

Steve Reich - City Life
iTunes

Minimalism never sounded so fucking good. Its noisy and beautiful all rolled into one. The documentary making of this album is a must see as well.
